From someone who, for 30 something years, only flew 40 + - size planes and was a genuine circle flyer now owns a 33% Yak and a 35% extra, and I am trying to do things I never thought of not too long ago. I am still learning to hover and the slow harrier stuff, and I am not sure if the long learning curve is me or if I need a better plane.

As Rabbit said I am kicking tires right now but I am serious about getting another plane. I do have a line on a Votec 3 complete with 3W 150 8611’s all around except it has a Seiko rudder system with its own battery, it is the same scheme as Show Times and comes with some other goodies. The price can’t be beat but I am not totally convinced if it's the plane I need.

    What do you guys think?

If you want a big CHEATER 40% plane get the SD models Yak! Bender has one for sale for 750.00.. Yeah it wont rocket out of a hover but it will give you the confidence to get down low and slow..

I've got 150 flights on a 3W Votec and 50 flights on a 3W Yak. Yak has a 3W 170CS on canisters with 3W 3D prop. Votec has a 3W 157CS on canisters with Meijlek 32x10 prop. Both have Hitec 5955TG servos. I love them both for different reasons:

Precision - Advantage Yak. Locks in and Tracks better than the Votec. Yak has minimal knife edge rudder to elevator/aileron mixing. Votec requires +10-12% up elevator to rudder mixing and is not linear or consistent at all airspeeds.

3D - Neutral. Votec tumbles better than the Yak. Yak locks in a high alpha, rolling angle of attack better than the Votec. Yak knife edge loops effortlessly, but you have to work the Votec and cheat a bit on the bottom, yet could be due to the less powerful engine. Votec has better inverted harrier stability.

Visual Appeal - Advantage Votec. It just looks badass sitting on the ground!

Link to website below has video/pictures of both for comparison.

For my flying style, I prefer the 3W Yak a teeeny bit more than the Votec. Good luck with your decision.

Yes I did. I can't understand why SHOW would put such inferior servos in when he knew I was going to exercise it to its maximum.:p

They don't call me Mr Wing tube for nothing:D

I have a hunch the very soon to be released EF 40% extra is the plane to have. If you have a line on a good votec and want one then go for it, but if you are waiting for something to come along that just yells "Here I am boys" and is dead sexy looking. Period. then you'll have to fight to get in line for one of them. I might have to rob my Ultra Light piggy bank for one myself.

Only problem with a Votec is the airscoop reminds me of Art Scholls Chipmonk. He came to our fair about 10 years in a row. That was about 6 too many. I do remember the first Exta, I think it was a 180 and it was a tiny thing. Vast improvment in aerobatics over a Chipmink. Back in those days all the planes landed behind the rodeo and anyone could walk down the flightline and touch the planes. Good stuff for a future RC fanatic.
