55% Clipped Wing Monocoupe

Ok, so I am trying to make final decisions on the landing gear and wheels. The full size Mono used a 6.50-10 wheel that has an O.D. of 22.1"-21.4". so 55% of this would be 11.75" O.D. To me that sounds a little too big as I was thinking about 7-8"dia. wheels. I am currently planning on making my own tires and hubs for this plane just for kicks since I have had to make everything else. I got some neat ideas in the skunk-works for when I am ready. so here is the million dollar question, should I stay scale and make the wheels 11.75" o.d. or use another smaller size? I have also decided to use an aluminum LG after recieving a quote of $375 for a C.F. one. I just cannot justify that cost for the LG so I will be milling out an aluminum gear that should (key word) weigh in at about 2.5#/2.75# when done.

You could use rubber Dolly wheels- might be on the heavy side, but would get the job done-

Too bad about the carbon gear- how are you going to bend them without losing the strength?

My goodness rubber dolly wheels are way to wide and heavy. I plan on machining the gear first, then bending it, then heat treating it to stress relieve and make stronger.

The plan would be to make a "low-profile" tire and lightened rim. the tire will only be about 1 1/4" wide and the tire would be about 1/2" thick.

hear is a link similar to what I will be doing to heat treat the gear: http://www.beckracing.com/page04.htm

I got a bunch of wing parts cut out last night. all I have left to laser out for the wing is the 1/8" basla parts ( about 24 of them) and the 1/8" lite ply parts (about 52 of them). I am having a heck of a time getting my 1/8" lite ply for some reason. it still hasn't been ordered yet. sorry for the crappy pic, took it with the cell. I am really happy with the way the aileron TE turned out

If anyone knows a source that I can get 24x48 or 36x48 sheets of lite ply, let me know. I'd go with dealer imports but they only ship freight so my last shipping bill was over $100. I am trying to avoid that if I have to,

Ever think about just using lite ply to do your hubs and insert a couple bearings at the Axle point? You could do a couple layers cross grained then mill the centers out to some custom hub design. Quick coat of paint to seal and bam cheap. Heck you have the laser. Now the actual Wheel I have to think about.. I'm sure there is some two or three part stuff out there we could pour into a mold then turn for finish.

check that video out. The center part of the wheel is all you would need to do out of wood then just sourcing some type of foam/rubber for the wheels.

Do you have any up close pics of the scale wheel and hub less the wheel pant? or heck any pics of the assembly at all? Your laser could bust those out in NO time..

I have always like the Oring idea just don't think the look will be scale at all.

Do you relize you just sent me on youtube video journey, LOL. I click that link, see a link for another wheel, that leads me to a wooden gear clock, then Legos of all things. I gotta make me one of those wooden gear clocks! :) yeah I am easily distracted, lol.

Anyway, back to wheels. wonder how the BH cub wheels would look on there? (without the "Cub" center hub)

I love the puzzle like build makes it look almost easy. The hours youve put into it certainly show! What about the kavan wheels like the Pitts. In the pics of the plane i cant even see a wheel, maybe just go light.

welcome to the circus Brian! the puzzle like structure is followed through the entire build of the plane.

do you know what the weight of a kavan wheel is for 7 or 8"??

Didn't get anything done on the Mono this weekend. I am hoping to have a full build day this Sat. and be able to get a wing panel all framed up and ready for sheeting. If I am happy with the weight and structure of the first panel, I will then cut out the second panel and go to town on it. as long as there are no major issues, it should be smooth sailing untill I get to the fiberglass.

**Update**
Well, I am broke again... I just ordered the lite ply for the wings and all the covering for this puppy. ended up getting 25ft rolls, 3 of magenta and 2 of cream. for the lite ply I made sure I won't run out and got 16 sheets, lol.

Once the wood comes in i'll be moving along at a good pace, but I am kinda on hold for the moment.

Wood and Covering will be in mid-late this week :( not much visual progress can be made untill then. Hang tight, good stuff is coming.
