Default Opinions on runnng Nitro in Gas powered egnines.

Anybody ever do it?

Conventional gasser? (curiousity)

Converted gasser? (see below)

Pro's

Cons?

Have put an ignition on a Saito 100 and as expected lost some performance because I did not change the stock carb.

Was wondering if I can squeeze more power out of a charge with nitro. Was thinking of something like 5 or 10%.

This is an experiment....no need for derogatory statements like get a real gasser or put a walbro on it.....Please. I just an interested in exploring how far this little engine can go on gasoline and if mixing nitro in fuel is a no no or not...or if anybody has experience good or bad out of it.

Thanks

I wonder what it would take to run e85 in our motors. The HP potential would be much higher. I wonder if you could mix the oil the same way or if it would work at all

Without higher compression ratios the benefits of nitro in our gassers is virtually nil. I've tried it and gained little or nothing.

E85 will only provide more power if you use more of it. Sort of like a glow or alcohol race engine.

This is the current setup. Have lost 4- 500 rpm over previous 15% nitro setup. Will also try going down an inche in prop next time out.

Exactly. Can you just run a larger carb or would there be a need to have more compression also? You could run more timing also?

Wow that is pretty cool Richard!

4-500 isn't too bad when you think about the money savings in nitro. It seems doable anyway.

Yeah, I was hovering it down by the end of the day...wind was crappy... found that the wind up is slow, think it is over propped slightly.... my full power uplines now feel like it used to at 3/4 throttle... The plane net weight loss was about an ounce as compared to glow when RTF, what I gained in ignition weigh I basically lost in fuel reduced load, went from an 11 oz to 6 oz fuel tank...

First flight was 7 minutes and the tank was 3/4 full.

Last flight of the day was 10 minutes, working it hard and still had a little more than a third of a tank....so 4 oz of 92 octane in 10 minutes.

Make no mistake....not as powerful as the glow version...

It's been a while since I owned one of those 100's, but I think I was spinning a 15x4W somewhere around 10K. I don't think mine was happy with a 16x4

ok , this is way cool , but have some questions .
what did you have to modify ? just put on the ign. stuff and change the plug ? did you have to use one of those tiny little 1/4" plugs ? how has it been flying ?
Great thinking Outside the Box ...............
