DA 120 RPM Opinions
Is 5600 rpm loading the motor too much?
It doesn't seem to be over heating (60 degrees air temps)and the spool up is actually pretty acceptable. Upon landing my motor temps is 240 on one jug and 228 on the other. Typical temps is 220 on the hot side and 208 on the cool side.
The engine has somewhere around 140 flights on it so it is well on it's way to be broken in.
Any thoughts?

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Just out of curiosity, what prop are you using?

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Them temps seem kinda high to me . My DA170 heads are 140-155 F after 15 min. of strait hovering maneuvers. This was in the summer on an 85 degree day with the needles tweaked .I like to prop it to turn 6,000 to 6,100 RPM.
The jugs ain't even turned the slightest bit pink.Hell I even broke it in while brushing up on torque rolls. I must have torqued it during the entire breakin period. I had some 150s that ran around 200 F and the heads turned very pink in no time.
My ZDZ 160s with painted heads run a bit hotter at 220 max....but painted heads will always (read ) hotter.
You should be able to hold your finger on the front of the cylinder fins for the count of 2 with out taking skin off. Keep making adjustments if needed. Use a fresh finger for each test. Hollering "OUW PHUK!!!" while shaking it off each time will earn you well due respect from you're peers. If you run out of digits be creative.

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Yeah it has always run warm. But it seems to not mind it all that much.

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Look in an exhaust port or pull a cylinder. If it's not caking carbon or scratching the piston and cylinder at the exhaust port it's good to go. If it is scratching thats a sign it's building hard deposits from too much heat. Then those pieces of carbon flake off and grind on the piston and cylinder on their way out.

It is low. You need to be 6200 to 6800 max. My 28 x 12 Mej typically turns (+ or -) 6400 with std muffs. I ran a 28 x 12 Mej at 6400, a 28 x 10 at 6950, a 29 x 10 Mej at 6300 and a Biela 29 x 10 at 6100. For me the 29 x 10 works the best for 3D. Torque rolls are a piece of cake and hover is smooth. Others prefer the 28 x 12 but that was too much of a pogo for me. The 28 x 10 over rev'ed badly but one of your Florida flyers has stated that he likes it best.

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
I would say it is loading it too much, something else is wrong, or your needles are way off and on the lean side.
Which 28x12 are you running?? That might be it also

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Yes, something is screwy. Which brand of prop is it? Laminated wood maybe? Even a semi trashed 120 should turn a 28 x 12 +6000 unless something is really out of whack.

Re: DA 120 RPM Opinions
Temps over 210 are generally considered too high. If you're not baffled, you might consider putting some in. Those high temps could be from running lean, which also would explain the low revs too....
