2012 IMAC Basic
SO is anyone practicing the new 2012 IMAC BASIC sequence yet? I don't get to make many contest because of my job, but I practice it like I make everyone of them.
Just wondering what anyone thinks of the new sequence...I have the hardest time with the teardrop. Flying a straight line back and forth is not easy either....LOL.

Re: 2012 IMAC Basic
The Basic sequence tends to be pretty similar from year to year. As a matter of fact every single maneuver is the same with the exception of flight order and the teardrop which starts with a vertical.
FWIW I bore myself at times I spend so much time just practicing lines. There are only 3 BTW, horizontal, 45 degree and vertical but they are the fundamental elements that ALL of precision aerobatics are founded on. I take a couple minutes out of every precision flight to just huck it for mental relief.
Maneuver 9 and 10 are the same for 2012, an Immellman followed by a 1.5 turn spin to exit the box. This year I saw a lot of guys rushing right into the spin. Personal preference here but I feel the maneuver is both easier to fly and presents much better if you fly just past center, perform the spin offset to one side and then exit the box coming back towards yourself.

Re: 2012 IMAC Basic
Agreed I like to offset my spin too...I need to practice my spins I always add aileron just out of habit...and I always want to spin right when sometimes I should be going left...its funny how you can do things real good one direction but not the other...
I like to practice just going back and forth as straight and level as I can doing 4 point rolls in the center and cubans or hammer heads on the ends...A buddy I fly with just started flying IMAC and it really reminds of how hard it is to fly straight and level and and even speed and consistent distance from yourself....
Does anyone practice on the sim much..I find it hard on the sim.

Re: 2012 IMAC Basic
I use the Sim all the time for getting my neural pathways down for new maneuvers especially 3D and heli skills.
Beyond memorizing the sequence I find the sim nearly worthless for IMAC practice because most of the maneuvers are not that difficult but getting them to the point that they are where I want them and precise requires the real world dynamics of my specific airplane. Also, depth perception is nearly non existent on any sim making it nearly impossible to tell whether I'm moving in or out.

Yeah, what he said!
The parallelism to the runway on the sim is even harder than in real life, so it's almost worthless for that. Not to mention the difference between "real" snaps and spins.

Re: 2012 IMAC Basic
Well I'm glad its not just me then...the depth thing on a SIM sux. I agree there is nothing better for learning that new 3D move. I have been trying to master the 'pop top' and just can't get it...I broke out the SIM and just about have it down now.. I think...

It's hard to get the violent rotation and inertia on the sim that the flightline provides.

I have been flying planes for the past six years and I thought flying IMAC was going to be easy. Boy was I wrong.....It has been the most difficult thing I have done. The things I thought were going to be easy have proven to some of the most difficult and frustrating. I hope this year I will fly in more contests. I am building a more potent ship for the upcoming season.

I love the challenge of flying IMAC and trying make 'perfect' lines. What are you building?

I had a 50cc SBACH that I flew last year and really enjoyed the plane, but it did not look like it would withstand the test of time. I live right around the corner of Aeroworks, so I got a 50cc Edge. I know I should have gone with Extra, but I love Edges....I flew a 30cc AW Edge and loved it. This was the plane that got me interested in IMAC. If I progress, I will eventually purchase a 100cc AW Extra or a PAU Extra SP.
I love AW planes...they are complete, hardware is great, and the service is awesome. I like Mark, Kim, and Rocco over at AW. Oh yea those perfect lines are what is driving me nuts.....I can do most of the maneuvers, but stringing them all together and making them look perfectly straight is what is driving me nuts....I have burned lots of gas trying to get it right.....no practice for me now, we just got five inches of snow last night.....ughhhhhhhh
