Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
Is this a budget build? You looking for an economy (cheap) setup, or name-brand goodies?

I guess the best criteria would be light weight, powerful, reliable, least maintenance.
The combo they offer includes a Hacker A50-12L. The guys at the field are saying they're burning up the Hacker motors and the Scorpion motors are throwing the magnets. I had an AXI in the AJ Extra 330 I had. I was told they were lighter and more efficient.
" You looking for an economy (cheap) setup or name-brand goodies?"
I'd be interested in seeing both, as long as the economy setup is up to the task.
Thanks!!

Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
Sad thing is- even the name brand stuff is probably made in the same place...
Glad you're getting a new plane Dean!

Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
I must say that I love my Hacker setup ( unlimited power, 8-10 min flight times) with Thunder Power bats. I also have some 30c batteries I got from Valley Veiw RC that are great performers and were signifigantly cheaper. Time will tell though. I only have a small amount of time on them at this point. Oh, mine is only the 51" Slick but I still think the Hacker system is the bomb!

Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
Well, I checked every motor that HobbyKing sells, and not a single one comes close to the necessary weight/power of the recommended Hacker A50-12L. That could be why the Hackers are not holding up, they pushed it too hard. All of the HK motors in the 2000-2500W range necessary to make this bird strong are near double the weight of the Hacker A50. That's probably not a good path.
I hate to say it, but your best selection for this bird is probably the AXi 5320/18, but it costs around $200 (without a mount). At least with the AXi you get a free lifetime replacement guarantee if it fails. That's worth a lot. It's a perfect match for this bird on 6S Lipo and APC-E 20x8. The AXi can easily be over-prop'ed 125% of rating to make well over 2000 watts. This is one of those situations where a China-cheap motor choice is probably not a good idea. You'll have a very heavy build to get the power you want.

Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
Good set of choices for Battery Selection. You can go 6S1P or you can pair-up 3S1P cells and wire connect in series.
Rhino 3700mAh 3S1P 25C, $24.89 ea, 2x327=654g
Rhino 4900mAh 3S1P 20C, $32.83 ea, 2x352=704g
Rhino 4900mAh 3S1P 25C, $37.13 ea, 2x395=790g
Rhino 4900mAh 6S1P 25C, $68.47 ea, 730g
Rhino 3700mAh 6S1P 25C, $49.99 ea, 600g
These are all going to be lighter builds, but shorter flight times than the recommended 5000-5800mAH packs.

Re: Setup for 71" AJ Slick
You'll need a good UBEC. Most don't recommend use of the built-in BEC on High voltage/amperage ESC's like this.
Recommended:
Castle BEC Pro, $47
HK Option:
TURNIGY 5-7.5A (8~42v) HV UBEC, 5V-6V/5A, 37g, $16.45
